The first international presentation of IPACK-IMA 2018, the leading exhibition of food and non-food processing and packaging technologies scheduled for Fiera Milano from 29 May to 1 June 2018, was held on Saturday 6th May during Interpack.

In the presence of journalists and representatives of business associations and companies from Austria, Brazil, China, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK and USA, Riccardo Cavanna and Domenico Lunghi, respectively Chairman and Managing Director of the show’s management company, presented the key innovations of IPACK-IMA 2018.

«The 2018 edition will mark a major turning point for the show," said Cavanna at the beginning of the press conference. "Following the acquisition of the show management company by UCIMA (Italian Automatic Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Association) and Fiera Milano, the event’s strategies have been redefined with the aim of further expanding its international scope and making the Italian show a key appointment for industry professionals keen to discover the latest technological innovations, the highest performing materials and cutting-edge logistics solutions.»

Through the support of the leading Italian packaging machinery manufacturers affiliated to Ucima and the show’s longstanding exhibitors, a new exhibition space layout has been organised according to target markets.

Each hall will host exhibiting companies organised into key industries centred around eight business communities: Food, Fresh&Convenience; Confectionary; Beverage; Pasta, Bakery & Milling; Industrial & Durable Goods; Health & Personal Care; Chemicals Industrial & Home, Fashion & Luxury.

A number of major cross-cutting themes relevant to all the business communities have been identified and will characterise both the exhibited products and the educational and conference topics at IPACK-IMA 2018. These are anti-counterfeiting, e-commerce, sustainability and Industry 4.0.

Innovative materials will also take centre stage in a new exhibition section entitled IPACK-MAT. Organised in collaboration with Material ConneXion Italia, it will be entirely devoted to innovative materials solutions including raw materials, semi-finished products and components for high value-added products and packaging and innovative containers. It will serve as a melting pot of ideas and creative inspirations for strategic corporate areas from R&D to Marketing.

IPACK-MAT will collaborate with PLAST-MAT and PRINT-MAT, the analogous satellite events of the shows PLAST and PRINT4ALL.

Another major feature of IPACK-IMA 2018 is its participation in THE INNOVATION ALLIANCE.

«This is a major new project that brings together five important shows: PLAST, PRINT4ALL, MEAT-TECH and INTRALOGISTICA ITALIA, as well as IPACK-IMA itself», explained Domenico Lunghi.

«In an exhibition floor of 140,000 sqm the show will host a range of production sectors united by a strong supply chain vision: from processing to packaging, from plastics processing and industrial and commercial printing to customised graphic design of packaging and labels, through to handling and storage of consumer-ready goods

«Along with our own promotional campaign, the show will also benefit from that of The Innovation Alliance," continued Lunghi. "This consists of a network of agents in 40 countries and communication activities across more than 70 countries to ensure an increase in numbers of domestic and international visitors

More than 150,000 visitors are expected at Fiera Milano during the five days in which the five shows will be held.

Companies in the industry have been responding enthusiastically to these new characteristics. A year before the show is due to open, 60% of the available exhibition space has already been booked by leading Italian and international shows, who have chosen IPACK-IMA as the ideal venue to present their latest innovations to the market.

The promotional activities carried out at Interpack confirm the strategic importance of the project. Large numbers of visitors are pre-registering so as not to risk missing the 2018 show and new exhibitors are booking space to be amongst the key players in this important exhibition project.

REVO Open House Master Class 2016 DSC 0105 NEWSLETTERS 38

The REVO Master Class Open House which took place from 29th November to 1st December 2016 at the Competence Center of Bobst Firenze, Italy, succeeded in being a very dynamic event rich in interaction and networking opportunities for the 322 people that attended it over the three days and six sessions.   Printers and converters of flexible packaging, folding cartons and labels made the journey to attend a workshop which would provide an in-depth knowledge of REVO technology, whilst also seeing it in action during actual printing demonstrations.

The event also marked the start of REVO Master Certification. By taking part in the Master Classes and demo tracks, participants in the event completed the first step and received the REVO Silver badge, the first of three certificates – Silver, Gold and Platinum - that will lead to REVO Master certification. The program will be made available next year by the REVO Team during dedicated events held at different locations worldwide.

The REVO offering to the packaging industry is truly unique. It is a process that flows from pre-press through to print production; and summing up the highlights of the demonstrations shown on two BOBST inline flexo presses makes impressive reading, demonstrating the reliability and unique quality of the REVO Digital Flexo workflow:

  • Printing of four different jobs on film and carton substrates using 16 different Pantone colors in total, without ever changing the ink in the print units or the anilox rollers
  • Job changes automatically performed in one minute, with the new job in register after less than 20 meters of waste
  • In each of the four jobs all the Pantone colors showed a Delta-E color accuracy of less than 2.0, notwithstanding the different physical properties and level of absorption of the 38 micron unsupported polypropylene and the 240 gsm light board substrates used in the demo runs.

What lies behind such impressive performance is the determination of the companies that, since 2013, have made up the REVO technology team to push the flexo process beyond its current limitations: pooling together their know-how and resources to develop a new reliable and predictable process.  All the REVO Team partners – Americk Packaging, Apex International, AVT, BOBST, DuPont, Esko, Flint Group, X-Rite PANTONE and UPM Raflatac - were present in numbers at the event to share their know-how and the specifics of their contribution to the development of the process, both in the Master Classes and during one to one and small group discussions with event participants.

Durst, the industrial inkjet specialist, and new partner Wifac, the company with expert label and packaging knowledge, have announced their first customer cooperation deal across BENELUX for the Tau 330E UV digital inkjet press.

Tau330E 4C Presse NEWSLETTERS 38

The Label Collective Group at Haaksbergen, The Netherlands, which employs 35 people, has high expectations for the Tau 330E solution. Live production has started this week. It will help to open new markets and further accelerate its fast-growing business in labels.

Critical to the company, which is known as TLCG, is increasing capacity to cope with accelerating demand – its own turnover is going up by over 40% a year. In addition, the lower total cost of ownership model of the Durst Tau 330E solution was a defining factor in the investment decision making.

TLCG, which will soon be rebranding two divisions - Label Discounter and EtiketXL- as Zolemba, has more than 45,000 clients across Europe. Other key markets outside of The Netherlands include Germany, France, Belgium and the UK. Durst’s digital technology ensures that web-2-print software can be maximised for a company that delivers highest quality label solutions, including variable data options. Goods are typically shipped within 24 hours of job ordering.

Richard Rensen, Director of TLCG, said: «It’s impressive! Now we are looking to grow further into new markets thanks to the speed and quality of the machine, plus the huge potential for variable data. We are confident that we’ll quickly get a good return on investment from this Durst Tau 330E solution. We have ambitious growth plans. We’re delighted to have secured this Durst solution through Wifac, a company local to us with which we have developed a long-standing relationship, which has also provided us with market-leading back-up support.»

Mike Englander, Durst Phototechnik’s Business Development Manager, Labels & Packaging Printing, said: «The Tau 330E is proven technology that offers an affordable, high quality digital total solution for the label printer. More than 100 of these Durst solutions have been installed into forward-thinking, expanding companies such as TLCG, which we’re delighted to announce is the first in The Netherlands under this special cooperation with Wifac.

“Thanks to our total package offering, customers can build even more successful businesses by going digital. They don’t have to wait – the solution is here. Businesses can configure their digital future today.”»

Robbert Amse, Commercial Director for Wifac, said: «Durst’s renowned inkjet technology ensures high flexibility, fast and efficient production on an extremely wide range of substrates. The colour strength and ability to provide each tag with a unique code is another advantage. TLCG is a perfect example of how small and medium-sized label companies are increasing profits by investing in digital systems and linking to other growing technologies such as web-2-print.»

Durst and Wifac’s joint cooperation agreement has been described as a win-win situation for both companies. It is also part of a wider strategic plan for Durst to ensure local presence and opportunities in BENELUX and further afield.

Wifac’s local knowledge in local customer sales and service support is crucial in this distributor agreement involving Durst’s label and packaging businesses. The digital inkjet presses - the Durst Tau 330 and 330E machines - are complemented by a range of options. These include low migration and low odour inks suitable for primary food packaging, as well as pharmaceutical sectors.
